Summary: In this 3 week course you'll learn how and why to disconnect from devices to reconnect with intuition & creativity.
This course promotes self reflection through journaling. Our focus will be to look at our involvement with the digital world and its impacts. We are going to look at our own habits online and screen time uses, discussing the impacts on ourselves and others, as well as celebrating and sharing things we do that are non-digital. The format involves presenting information and research as well as questions for discussion and individual reflection. Students can choose their own level of participation however daily journal writing is highly recommended and supported.
For school aged participants, groups will be age appropriate in terms of participants and content. Parents will be welcome to attend and participate some of the sessions if students are interested in that option.
Participants will learn about the impacts of digital engagement through self reflection and discussion. Relevant information will be presented as well to promote consciousness of the chains of supply behind our devices and the historical origins of our current online world. Some discussion and sharing of content about the future will also likely occur.
Daily journaling about the use of digital devices, screen time and self evaluation of impacts.
The participant is not assessed, simply supported to learn & self-assess. There will be no testing. This is simply an interest based course which may or may not result in lifestyle adjustments and ideally increased clarity of communication as through safe, supported discussion the learner is encouraged to express themselves.
What I bring to the class:
I am a poet, a creative writer, English as a second language teacher and I have a great deal of facilitation training and experience. I created this course because I felt that there are effects to online activities that we often don't consciously think about or process, even if many of us are generally aware of them. There certainly isn't enough actual conversation about even just the content that we are viewing online and how it makes us feel. I started developing this course to engage people in these conversations and hope to re-focus some of the time people currently spend online into other non-digital pursuits; to help them to embrace a change in lifestyle. I'm perfect for this work because I've done it myself and I can attest to the benefits. I'm also a big social media and tech enthusiast so I also do this work to support others to make the most out of their tools of technology.
Learner supply list:
Journaling templates and prompts will be provided for download, they can be printed or copied into the student's own journal, any simple notebook will do.
